Lombok's Sacred Volcano

Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani) is Indonesia's second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres, dominating the skyline of northern Lombok. As the centrepiece of Rinjani National Park, it is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding trekking destinations — a challenging multi-day climb through savannah ridges, cloud forests, and volcanic terrain.

At the heart of the caldera lies Segara Anak, a stunning crescent-shaped crater lake sitting some 2,000 metres above sea level. Its turquoise waters, natural hot springs, and the smaller active cone of Gunung Baru Jari make the summit trek an unforgettable experience for adventurous travellers.

Rinjani is deeply sacred to the Sasak and Balinese Hindu communities of Lombok, who consider the mountain and its lake holy. For many visitors, combining a Gili Islands beach break with a Rinjani trek is the perfect way to experience both sides of Lombok — turquoise seas and towering volcanic peaks.
